Brits spend £34 billion each year on trips abroad, according to the latest research from Alliance & Leicester Personal Loans.
In addition holidaymakers spend an extra £23.3 billion while they are on their trips.
Alliance & Leicester also finds the average cost of a trip abroad is £514 per person – or £2,056 for a family of four.
Over a lifetime, this means we spend an average of £41,634 on trips around the world.
"Holidays are meant to be a time of enjoyment but often the cost of going abroad, especially for a family, can be quite substantial," said Richard Al-Dabbagh, Alliance & Leicester Personal Loans manager.
Some of the most popular destinations include Australia, where Brits spend an average of 45 days and spend £2,030.
New Zealand also proved attractive to travellers, who stay an average of 41 days on the island and part with £2,004.
